A classroom learning community is a space where students feel safe and encouraged to learn with and from each other, explore new ideas, and work together. They should be free to take risks. Risk-taking should be encouraged. As Kindergarten teachers it is important that while we set expectations around learning and routine, we should also make sure that the teacher is part of the classroom community and not the sole leader. The qualities and characteristics I would like to promote I build community are equity, tolerance, respect, acceptance, openness, kindness, responsibility, honesty, and trust. Theories that inform my idea of classroom community include funds of knowledge, sociocultural theory, community of learners, culturally sustaining pedagogy. |
